The Perfect Tax Return Deadline Tonic

Edward Kirkby posted this on Jan 31st, 2018

Hopefully we’re not the first people to tell you what day the 31st of January is (and for all you football fans out there, we’re not talking about transfer deadline day!).

So, if you’re sat with a smug look on your face knowing that you’ve already filed your tax return, or if you’re going to push the midnight deadline tonight, we have just the tonic for you.

Why not pour yourself an Income Tax Cocktail – at Actors Tax, we’ll definitely be drinking one many!

The origins of this cocktail seem to be obscure; it’s been around since at least the 1920s, but otherwise, no one seems to know where or when it arose, or how it was named. Maybe it was invented by someone on the 31st of January?!

The Income Tax Cocktail

1 1/2 ounces gin
1/4 ounce dry vermouth
1/4 ounce sweet vermouth
1 ounce orange juice
1 dash Angostura bitters
Optional garnish: orange twist
Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

To recap on tax deadlines:

31 January – this is the deadline for submitting you online Self Assessment tax return for the previous tax year. This is also the deadline for making your first payment on account for the following tax year if you are required to do so. Payments on account can be a bit tricky to understand, but HMRC provide a good explanation.

31 July – this is the deadline for making your second Self-Assessment payment on account.

Until next year – Cheers, Salud, Yamas, Prost!
